Let's Help N. out!

Hi Dave I was at your Brock presentation last week and I thought it was just amazing. I've started to notice changes in myself in just one week. I'm also going out and buying cards. I was just wondering what are some good questions to ask in an information interview? I've thought about it and I have an information interview set up next week but I want some really good questions that will start to help me connect. The job I'm getting information on is a Private banker. If you could please help that would be greatly appreciated.Thank you. N.

Hi N. Thanks for your kind words! I have posted some good questions and ideas on informational interviews athttp://www.geocities.com/dhowlett2004/mypage.html Look especially at the article called the Art of the Warm referral and the blog on strategic networking.

Anyone else got some great questions for N?

Hi N. A question I always ask is: “what courses or further learning should I consider to better market myself to Company X” or something along those lines.

Here’s why. I think this demonstrates how willing you are to LEARN and IMPROVE yourself. It says: “this person wants to keep learning and we will be able to teach them.” It might not land you a job there, but it might help you standout when they need to solve a problem in the future.

Speaking from personal experience, I’m currently in the transition from government to the private sector. I have a masters in history but am still finding the transition more challenging than anticipated. So besides my job search and networking, I’m taking in as many classes, lectures and book readings as I can find and my budget will allow. (That’s how I came to see NDS!) My goal is to not only stay current in world affairs, Victorian literature, personal fitness, etc. but to be able to say in ANY interview after the above question: “Oh an evening course is offered at Ryerson? That’s great. I would enjoy taking that course. I love to learn and was at a lecture on Sherlock Holmes recently…” It could even lead to a conversation about common interests. Good luck!

PS. If anyone is looking for someone who loves to learn; is very knowledgeable of government; and is a strong communicator, please let me know. markjstewart@yahoo.ca
